Award win for student films on deep vein thrombosis

MPC team winning award for adverts

E&I’s Toby Meredith and CCI students have won a prestigious award for their work on patient information videos for the NHS.

Students created two videos and two animations highlighting best practice around preventing and living with DVT. The won first prize at the Anticoagulation Achievement Awards, which recognise innovation, excellence and outstanding practice in the delivery of anticoagulation. Toby Meredith, Media Production Manager in CCI’s School of Creative Technologies, directed the students and attended the awards ceremony at the Houses of Parliament on the 11th October 2017.

The project was commissioned by a consultant surgeon from the Queen Alexandra hospital in Portsmouth, Simon Toh. He wanted a campaign to improve patient awareness about DVT prevention prior to surgery and approached the Media Production Centre who suggested animation and live video. The suite of material has been used by staff across the NHS and via the thrombosis network to inform and educate patients on several issues, including the signs and symptoms of DVT.

Mr Toh was delighted with the results and presented the project at the 2017 Portsmouth Hospital NHS Trust Research and Innovation Conference. In September it was presented at the national NHS FAB for Change Conference that recognises fabulous projects in the NHS. The project was exceptionally well-received with praise for the light hearted approach to passing on patient advice and the unique way of achieving it.

The students were studying on various courses: BSc Animation, BA Film Production, BSc Television and Broadcast, MSc Film Production, BA Drama and Performance and BA Graphic Design.

Toby was thrilled that the project won: “As well as being a great accolade for the students’ work, we hope that it can really make a difference to patient wellbeing. As producer of the projects I was extremely impressed with the work that was produced and the level of professionalism by all the students. I’m also grateful to the academics who were involved along the way.”
